One proposal, put forth by Grand Penn Partners, advocates for moving Madison Square Garden across Seventh Avenue to make way for a new, light-filled train station. This group, backed by conservative interests and mega-Trump donor Thomas Klingenstein, envisions a neoclassical architectural revival, complete with Greco-Roman columns and marble, a style they dub "Make America Beautiful Again."
But here's where it gets controversial: the other public proposal, from Halmar International, suggests keeping Madison Square Garden in its current location. Their plan includes renovating Penn Station and the arena's dome while expanding service and improving navigation.
And this is the part most people miss: the third finalist, Penn Forward Now, a consortium of major developers, has yet to reveal their design proposal.
The selection process is underway, with the master developer expected to be chosen in May and announced publicly by June. Former New York City Transit President Andy Byford has been appointed to lead the redevelopment, with an ambitious goal of breaking ground by 2027.
