Just five miles from the University of Miami’s campus, Columbus students were decked out in orange and green on Friday, rallying behind the Hurricanes as they prepared to face Indiana in Monday’s national championship. But here’s where it gets controversial: some students boldly chose crimson, the color of the Hoosiers. Why? Because Indiana’s star quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, is a Columbus alum—and he’s not alone. Five former Columbus players, all state champions, are on the rosters of both teams, three for Miami and two for Indiana.
Dave Dunn, Columbus’ football coach, refuses to pick a side. “Even my daughter tried to get an answer out of me, and I wouldn’t give her one,” he told NBC News. How could he? These players are his boys, his legacy. Among them is Mendoza, who wasn’t a highly recruited player out of high school but transferred from Cal last offseason and went on to win the Heisman Trophy.
