They pile onto the already heavy load of schoolwork, extracurricular commitments, and the emotional weight of his experiences. Yet, Alec’s resilience shines through. He’s not just surviving; he’s thriving. As a Year 12 student and vice-captain of his school, he’s excelling in subjects like biology and history, with a clear goal in mind: to enter healthcare.
But here’s where it gets controversial—Alec’s dream of becoming a paramedic raises questions about the toll such a career might take on someone who’s already faced so much. Is it a noble pursuit or a risky endeavor? Alec sees it as a way to give back, a full-circle moment inspired by those who helped him. 'My goal is to help others, just as they’ve helped me,' he says.

But let’s not sugarcoat it—Alec’s journey is far from easy. 'The fear of recurrence is always front and center,' he admits. 'Every scan, every unusual symptom, keeps me up at night.' As he’s grown older, he’s come to understand the profound impact his diagnosis had on his family and friends. 'It’s about carrying scars—both physical and mental—that others can’t always see,' he says. 'It gives me a unique perspective on how precious life is.'
To manage his challenges, Alec relies on accommodations at school, sacrificing free time to focus on his studies. 'I’ve accepted that I can’t change the past,' he says. 'I tackle my problems in my own way.' His support system—friends, family, and his school—plays a crucial role in his daily life.
Alec and Peter are now sharing their story for The Kids' Cancer Project's K'day and International Childhood Cancer Day (February 15), aiming to raise $400,000 for childhood cancer research. 'After everything, I understand how vital it is to invest in new treatments,' Alec says. 'My hope is that no child will have to endure what I did.'
Peter’s description of the treatments Alec endured is starkly honest. 'Chemotherapy attacks all cells, healthy and mutated, leaving a child in a state that’s hard to describe,' he says. 'Radiation, while focused, affects surrounding areas, both short-term and long-term. The side effects are cruel.' He emphasizes the urgent need for research into new treatment methods. 'Your child is diagnosed, subjected to harsh treatments, and often left feeling too sick to enjoy life,' he says. 'Research and science can change that.'
