Photographing
Your Wedding
by: Graham Langsworth
One of the biggest variables in the preparations
for your wedding day will involve the photographic
services that you employ. Unless the photographer
is a professional who offers high-quality results
and the flexibility that you'll need to customize
your wedding package, you may well be wasting
your hard-earned dollars on a product that will
leave you feeling angry and dissatisfied. These
cherished images will most likely be your only
visual keepsake of one of the most special days
of your life. Even if you're planning to videotape
the ceremony, nothing can replace a wedding album
that can be shared with others throughout the
years.
There are certain criteria you should look for
when you are interviewing photographers. First
of all, find out how much experience they have
with weddings. Second, ask to see some samples
of other weddings they have photographed. Look
for the quality of the photos, but also make sure
the photographers able to use creativity and originality
in his studies. You will want to look at group
pictures of the wedding parties and families,
as well as the pictures of the ceremony and the
reception. Look for photos that have a natural
feel to them, and that don't all look as if they
were posed, although you will want some portraits
as well.
If his work doesn't please you, look around some
more.
Everyone likes to see a few photos in their wedding
album that have obviously been set up by the photographer,
such as shots of the wedding party or simply the
newlyweds on their own. The style of the photograph
isn't the only important aspect of taking a good
picture, however. When you look at shots of this
nature, you should be able to see specific, and
natural, emotions in the faces of those who are
being photographed. Stiff, serious, emotionless
faces aren't what one would expect to see when
viewing someone's wedding album, and it would
be a shame for you to be left with such a flawed
keepsake. If the photographer doesn't display
talent in the area of capturing emotions, go elsewhere.
You shouldn't assume that the person who's showing
you the photos will be the one who's planning
to take the pictures. Make it a point to meet
with whoever is going to be assigned to cover
your wedding and speak with them directly regarding
any questions, concerns or specific instructions
that you may have. Workmanship, type and quality
of the photographs, pricing, special effects,
retouching and charges for proofs are some of
the things that should be discussed before the
wedding. You may also wish to arrange for them
to arrive early, in order to capture last-minute
preparations and the events that lead up to the
wedding, if that's something that you'd like to
include in your album.
Many studios now offer viewing of the proofs
online. If that is an option that is available,
you will be able to make a lot of decisions regarding
your album in the comfort of your home. Friends
and family may also be able to view online, and
add their input. Get the web address of the photographer
to be able to do this. You may need to work out
a payment plan with the photographer, since this
whole project may be very expensive. If ordering
online is an option in addition to viewing online,
be sure that the packages offered, including the
prices are clearly defined. Some studios will
also design the album for you as well.
Your wedding day is your day and yours alone,
and nothing is more exciting. Make sure you make
the photographic record of it as memorable as
possible. Of all the things you have to take care
of for your wedding day, few will offer such lasting
satisfaction as your photos. So don't skimp on
the time it takes to make sure you will have a
truly beautiful record of this experience
